Between the —10 and —15 school years, the percentage of EL students increased in more than half of the states, with increases of over 40 percent in five states.
While Spanish was the most common language spoken by ELs at home in —15, in some states there was more variation in the home language. The need to support less commonly spoken languages could also be different across school districts. Information about the characteristics and location of ELs in the following story map may help inform decisions about the provision of instructional supports and services for these students.
These figures represent the latest look at ELs across the country, primarily using publicly available data for the —15 and —10 school years. See figure notes for specific data sources. In —15 , there were more than 4. Hispanic or Latino students represented more than three times the share of ELs, compared to all students. More than 75 percent of ELs in —15 were Hispanic or Latino, but made up just 25 percent of all students. Asians also comprised a larger percentage of ELs than all students; about 5 percent of all students were Asian, but Asians accounted for 11 percent of ELs.
White students made up the third-largest share of ELs at 6 percent. Overall, 10 percent of students were ELs. A similar percentage of students with disabilities were ELs 9. In comparison, ELs represented 14 percent of all homeless children enrolled in public school, 15 percent of students served by either Public Title I Schoolwide Programs or Targeted Assistance School Programs , and 39 percent of eligible migrant children who resided in the state.
Though ELs made up 10 percent of students with disabilities, 14 percent of all ELs were students with disabilities, compared to 13 percent of the overall student population.
Among ELs with disabilities, nearly 50 percent had a specific learning disability, compared to nearly 38 percent of students with disabilities who are not ELs. Pew Research Center now uses as the last birth year for Millennials in our work. President Michael Dimock explains why.

Because of this growth, the demand for ESL and EFL teachers abroad has increased in recent years, with countries from India to Somalia calling for teachers to travel abroad and share their knowledge of English. As noted, there is an almost insatiable demand for qualified English-language instructors across the globe, particularly for native speakers, adds John Bentley, in his article, " Report from TESOL 1.
The group certifies more than 5, English-language teachers annually, most of whom then take jobs teaching English around the globe. This growth in those learning English globally is perhaps also due to the rising global business market where English is the most commonly accepted language.
The European Union recognizes 24 official languages within the group as well as a number of other regional minority languages and languages of migrant populations like refugees. Because of the vast diversity of languages and cultures in the EU, there has recently been a push to accept one common language for dealing with foreign entities outside those of member states, but this creates an issue of representation when it comes to minority languages like Catalan in Spain or Gaelic in the United Kingdom.
Still, workplaces within the EU operate with the 24 accepted primary languages, including English, most of which are offered as courses in primary schools and other educational institutions. Learning English, specifically then, becomes a pursuit of keeping up with the rapid globalization of the rest of the world, but fortunately for the EU, many citizens in its member states speak English quite fluently already.
With the UK expected to leave the EU through Brexit—short for "British Exit"—it remains to be seen if English will continue to be a primary language used by members of the organization. Actively scan device characteristics for identification.
