Who is aloun assamba

Today, November 25, as we recognise International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we reflect on some of the struggles still faced by women in their domestic spaces. FORMER Member of Parliament, government minister and high commissioner, Aloun Ndombet-Assamba, was accepting an award when she first spoke openly about being a victim of intimate partner violence.

Do I look like a woman who has been beaten? Do I look like a battered woman? Of course by this time Assamba had grown confident in herself again, as it was eight years after the abusive marriage ended, and she was able to see how sharing her experience could help other women who were being abused.

Like many women, though, she suffered silently during the relationship out of fear and shame. In an interview with All Woman ahead of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women IDEVAW , Assamba reflected on the out-of-body experience she had when early into her marriage her husband got into a jealous rage and hit her, shattering the honeymoon bliss. I said 'I don't know them' and bam! He struck me across the face saying I was telling a lie. I just sat there. That was only the beginning.

For the remainder of the marriage, Assamba told no one about the abuse. The abuse started very early, but I didn't make the decision to leave him until about a year and a half into the marriage. The reason for that was shame. Had I not been so blinded I would have seen the signs. There is something going on all the time in Jamaica. I know you hear a lot of things about Jamaica; some of it is true and some of it is not true. So come to Jamaica with an open mind!

Come to Jamaica knowing that you have a responsibility to yourself for your own safety, which is the same thing that Jamaicans traveling abroad feel about traveling. You can go into any city where they have their problems. Jamaica is just like any other place. The first time I saw soldiers with guns in a tourist area was in a country in Central America! You just have to be careful, as you would need to be in any strange place.

Jamaica is safe for our visitors. I would consider doing my own show. I go to most of the plays that open in Kingston. I watch movies and I like romantic comedies. I saw Smile Orange again at Calabash, which was wonderful. I did a lot of traveling before I became Minister of Tourism. My head needs to be clear and straight and that determines how much I enjoy the vacation. Niagara Falls is one of them. I love the Bog Walk gorges with the river running on the side. We just fill the house with food and liquor and we do nothing.

My dream vacation has to include people. I enjoyed my stint at Minister of Tourism. I met some wonderful people! I met some people who absolutely love Jamaica. Truth : Thank God you recovered, we need more good-hearted Jamaican like, God bless you. Truly inspiring. Eternal Father, Bless our Land: Had mine vaccination , didn't feel a thing and had no side effects. Everyone I have spoken to who have had it have had similar experiences. Raymond D Grant: No matter how much you isolate, social distance and wash your hands, like the flu, everybody is going to get infected with this virus eventually.

That is why it is so important to get the vaccine so that your immune system can be activated in advance of when you do get infected. Chercher: I am glad you got your shot but don't use the word inoculation in reference to it because this is not the usual vaccines that we got for chicken pox or small pox that will prevent you from getting those disease again.

This is more of a therapy that will teach your body to recognise the protein in the virus and attack it quickly and prevent it from replicating rapidly. All this will do is to prevent you from getting very sick, end up in the hospital and die Still wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands just as you did before you got the shot.

Even with the shot you can still get the virus, still get sick and still transmit it to others. Polyglot: Ms Kassandra, may the Almighty continue to guide and protect you. Thanks for sharing your story. The concoctions which you put in your teapot have been part of my arsenal for several months. There was no room for you at the hospital but that might have been a blessing — you found healing elsewhere. Really: Yet there are some who would refrain from taking the vaccine because they prefer to believe unqualified people who gleefully make videos.

I wonder if they can prove that the same dumb bells who made the audio, video or text them have or have not taken the vaccine and have them believing like the idiots they seem to be. Now you can read the Jamaica Observer ePaper anytime, anywhere. Subscribe Login.
